Petechial Hemorrhage of the Conjunctiva and Histological Findings of the Lung and Pancreas in Infantile Asphyxia Evaluation of 86 Case

Abstract: Eighty-five cases of infantile asphyxia were examined in relation to the degree of conjunctivae petechial hemorrhages and histological and immunohistochemical findings of the lungs and the pancreas . In very young cases, even in the strangulation cases , conjunctivae petechial hemorrhages were unremarkable and sometimes absent. “…Facial and conjunctival petchiae are found less often in infants who have asphyxiated than in older individuals [18,19], but the combination of conjunctival petechiae and acute pulmonary emphysema may indicate asphyxia in the young [20]. Certainly widespread petechiae in the skin of the face and drainage area of the superior vena cava is very strongly suggestive of chest and/or vascular compression [21,22].…”

“…Facial and conjunctival petechiae are not found in SIDS infants, and are also found less often in infants who have asphyxiated than in older individuals, 96,122,123 although it has been suggested that the combination of conjunctival petechiae and acute pulmonary emphysema indicates asphyxia in the young. 124 If florid petechiae are found in the skin of the face and drainage area of the superior vena cava, the possibility of chest and/or neck compression should be strongly considered.…”
