Pet-directed speech improves horses’ attention toward humans

Abstract: In a recent experiment, we showed that horses are sensitive to pet-directed speech (PDS), a kind of speech used to talk to companion animals that is characterized by high pitch and wide pitch variations. When talked to in PDS rather than adult-directed speech (ADS), horses reacted more favorably during grooming and in a pointing task. However, the mechanism behind their response remains unclear: does PDS draw horses’ attention and arouse them, or does it make their emotional state more positive? In this study,… Show more

“…(ii) It can be specific to animals that are living and developing in an anthropogenic environment, where speech is part of natural environmental stimuli (e.g. 36 , 37 ). “…Daugelis tyrėjų, analizuojančių gyvūnams skirtą kalbą, didžiausią dėmesį skiria tam tikroms akustinėms ypatybėms, nes balso tonas, aukštis ir garsumas labiausiai atkreipia gyvūno dėmesį ir lemia komunikacijos efektyvumą (Jeannin et al 2017;Benjamin, Slocombe 2018;Jardat et al 2022); kituose tyrimuose domimasi gyvūnų reakcija į šeimininko kalbą (Ben-Aderet et al 2017;Reeve, Jacques 2022). Verbalinė komunikacija analizuojama daug rečiau, nors žinoma, kad kai kurie gyvūnai gali suprasti nemažą žodžių ar frazių skaičių (Pilley 2013;Tempelmann et al 2014).…”

“…Be to, kaip ir bendraujant su mažu, dar nekalbančiu vaiku, gyvūnai yra pajėgūs suprasti ir atitinkamai sureaguoti į kai kurias frazes ar žodžius, ypač į tam tikras balso intonacines variacijas (Benjamin, Slocombe 2018;Jardat et al 2022), kurios dažnai pastebimos supaprastintos kalbos registruose. Yra atlikta tyrimų, apimančių dvi kalbėjimo su gyvūnais formas: vienu atveju į gyvūnus kreiptasi vartojant įprastą suaugusiesiems skirtą kalbą, kitu atveju -supaprastintą, gyvūnams skirtą kalbą.…”
