Pesticide Use, Poisoning, and Knowledge and Unsafe Occupational Practices in Thailand

Abstract: The agricultural system in Thailand has shifted from a traditional to a commercial agricultural system. Pesticides have been imported into Thailand to increase agricultural productivity, resulting in adverse health effects for farmers and consumers. However, the scientific data available in Thailand are limited and inconsistent. Thus, this article reviews research studies regarding pesticide use, poisoning, and knowledge and unsafe occupational practices in Thailand over the last decade. This article also make… Show more

“…In this concept, carbofuran has been identified as a hazardous compound for the humans causing severe poisoning and death (Ameno et al, 2001; Rajbanshi, 2017). Some recent reports confirmed the presence of carbofuran in honey samples, apples collected from Almaty Region of Kazakhstan, and watermelon in Thailand (El‐Nahhal, 2020; Łozowicka et al, 2020; Sapbamrer, 2018). Beyond the human toxicity, carbofuran also poses an enormous threat to the inhabitants of different ecosystems including birds, honeybees, fishes, and other aquatic species (Amaeze et al, 2020; Mishra et al, 2020).…”

“…Pesticide poisoning has been identified as a significant public health problem [15]. The major reason for its occurrence includes cases of occupational, accidental, and intentional poisoning [16,17,18,19]. Until now, pesticides are utilized on a vast scale globally, including in China [20].…”

“…Although remarkably successful, extensive pesticide usage gave birth to new problems, the most important one of which were environmental toxicity, and bioaccumulation [21–25]. Extensive and random usage, for example, inadequate application and spraying equipment and poor storage techniques resulted in soil, water, and food contamination that threatened public health and nontarget organisms [26–30]. Groundwater contamination by the leaching of agricultural pesticides from soils is a serious problem leading to pollution of the aquatic environment [24,31,32].…”

“…Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels as a result of pesticide usage and exposure can be associated with imbalances in cell homeostasis, which, in turn, affects cellular components and DNA stability, and causes genotoxicity [42,44–50]. A positive correlation between the incidence of various types of cancers such as leukemia, lung, and ovarian cancer as dependent variable and exposure to pesticides has been shown in many studies [13,29,30]. Besides the serious environmental and public health issues, different pest species have developed resistance to these chemicals, which leads to significant reduction in their effectiveness.…”
