Biological control is considered as a promising alternative to pesticide and plant resistance to manage plant diseases, but a better understanding of the interaction of its natural and societal functions is necessary for its endorsement. The introduction of biological control agents (BCAs) alters the interaction among plants, pathogens, and environments, leading to biological and physical cascades that influence pathogen fitness, plant health, and ecological function. These interrelationships generate a landscape of tradeoffs among natural and social functions of biological control, and a comprehensive evaluation of its benefits and costs across social and farmer perspectives is required to ensure the sustainable development and deployment of the approach. Consequently, there should be a shift of disease control philosophy from a single concept that only concerns crop productivity to a multifaceted concept concerning crop productivity, ecological function, social acceptability, and economical accessibility. To achieve these goals, attempts should make to develop “green” BCAs used dynamically and synthetically with other disease control approaches in an integrated disease management scheme, and evolutionary biologists should play an increasing role in formulating the strategies. Governments and the public should also play a role in the development and implementation of biological control strategies supporting positive externality.

The intelligent pesticide application techniques in orchards have grown rapidly worldwide due to the decrease in agricultural populations and the increase in labor costs. However, whether and how intelligent pesticide application techniques are better than conventional pesticide application remains unclear. Here, we evaluated the performance of the unmanned aircraft vehicle (UAV) and unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) on pesticide application, ecological environment protection, and human’s health protection compared to conventional manual methods. We quantified characteristics from the aspects of working effectiveness, efficiency, environmental pollution, water saving and carbon dioxide reduction. The results showed that the UAV application has the advantages of a higher working efficiency and less environmental pollution and natural resource consumption compared to the UGV and conventional manual methods despite of its worse spray performance The UGV application techniques could improve spray performance at the cost of high environmental pollution. The conventional spray gun technique was unfriendly to environmental and resource protection although it showed a better spray performance. Thus, the balance of improving spray performance and controlling environmental pollution is the key to improve the performance of UAV and UGV technology in the future. The study could be useful in the development of intelligent pesticide application techniques and provide scientific support for the transition of intelligent management in orchards.

BACKGROUND Air‐assisted sprayers is one of the primary fruit tree pest control approaches in agricultural production. It is necessary to study the influence of multiple factors on both wind field and droplet coverage of air‐assisted sprayers. In this article, foliage area volume density (FAVD) and power gradient were considered factors, and field tests were conducted in an orchard to determine such influence. RESULTS The results showed that in‐canopy wind speed was mainly affected by the air‐assisted sprayer. FAVD showed significance to the wind speed and droplet coverage inside canopies (P < 0.001), compared with power gradient (P > 0.05). With the increase of FAVD, the wind speed in the bottom layer of canopies first increased and then decreased, while the wind speed in the middle and top layers first decreased and then increased. Meanwhile, the wind field was mainly concentrated on the surface of canopies and gradually approached the canopy center as the power gradient increased. Furthermore, a Back‐Propagation (BP) neural network prediction model was constructed to predict droplet coverage at any canopy location to avoid repeated experiments. The overall correlation coefficient (R) of this model was about 0.731, indicating good fitting performance. CONCLUSION FAVD has a significant effect on wind speed and droplet deposition inside the canopy, and the air‐assisted sprayer parameter setting should consider the effect of FAVD. The prediction model can predict droplet deposition inside the canopy without repeating. The study can provide a reference for selecting operating parameters of air‐assisted sprayers and help reduce droplet loss and environmental pollution. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
