Pesticidal Activities of Callicarpa and Premna Essential Oils From Vietnam

Abstract: Mosquito-borne diseases are a consistent problem in Vietnam. Additionally, freshwater snail species are agricultural pests and are known to be intermediate hosts for several parasitic worms. There is a need for new and complementary botanical pesticidal agents for controlling these pests and essential oils have shown promise. In this work, essential oils from 2 species of Callicarpa ( C. rubella and C. sinuata) and 4 species of Premna ( P. chevalieri, P. corymbosa, P. maclurei, and P. tomentosa) were screened … Show more

“…This value is comparable to most of the investigated Premna species [23]. Germacrene D, alloaromadendrene, -bisabolene, -ylangene, -eudesmol, trans--bergamotene, caryophyllene, eugenol, linalool, limonene, terpinen-4-ol, -terpineol, -copaene, trans-β-bergamotene, aromandendrene, caryophyllene oxide and eremophilane were previously characterized and reported compounds from different species in the genus Premna [23][24][25]. The biological activities of the caryophyllene oxide and eugenol were previously reported to show antibacterial activities [24].…”

“…Therefore, the compounds α-pinene, α-phellandrene, and α-terpinyl acetate may have been mainly responsible for the larvicidal activity of E. robusta EO. Essential oils with 24-h LC 50 values between 10 μg/mL and 50 μg/mL (Hung et al, 2022) or with 24-h LC 90 values less than 50 ppm (Pavela, 2015) against C. quinquefasciatus larvae were considered "very active". Our findings in the current study suggest that E. robusta essential oil can be considered as a source of biopesticides for mosquito larvae control.…”

“…fuscocephala (Table 8). The essential oils pink flesh smooth skin guava (PG03) and Taiwan guava (PG05) were classified as "exceptionally active" against larvae of all three mosquito species with 24 h LC 50 values < 10 µg/mL [42]. In addition, the essential oils pink flesh rough skin guava (PG04) and Queen guava (PG06) were shown to be "exceptionally active" against larvae of Ae.…”

“…In addition, the essential oils pink flesh rough skin guava (PG04) and Queen guava (PG06) were shown to be "exceptionally active" against larvae of Ae. aegypti with 24 h LC 50 values of 2.71 and 8.51 10 µg/mL, respectively [42]. Two essential oils, pink pearl guava (PG01) and white flesh guava (PG02), were shown to be "very active" against all three mosquito species [42].…”
