“…The extinction coefficient (ε) was determined from the absorbance (A) using the expression ε = A/l•C, with l the light path length of the sample and C the dye concentration. For films, the absorption coefficient (α) was calculated through the expression α = ln (10)•A/h f , where h f is the film thickness.…”

“…Perylenediimides (PDIs) have been widely investigated as laser materials. In early works, PDI derivatives were studied in liquid solution as active materials for dye lasers. , Soon after, PDIs were dispersed in polymer matrixes in monolithic form, pursuing improvements in compactness and maintenance. , However, these solid-state lasers still showed the high operational energy requirements of their predecessors and resulted in additional photostability issues. In the literature, different synthetic strategies have been developed to improve the properties of PDIs toward lowering the optical pump energy needed ( i.e ., the threshold) for amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and laser operation, and to tune the emission wavelength of PDIs.…”

“…Composite glasses prepared via the sol-gel technique are of high optical quality 12 and large monolithic bulk forms can be made for various photonic functions, such as lasing, 21,22,40 optical power limitation, 41,42 nonlinear optical response 43 etc. An advanced approach is to form multiphasic nanostructured composites.…”

“…In both cases photostability is a property of prime importance for selecting a laser dye. 75 In recent years lasing from dye-doped solid matrices has been demonstrated by several groups via a one-photon excitation process 21,22,[76][77][78][79][80] and even via a two-photon excitation process. 45,46 Excellent slope efficiencies (up to 39%) and lifetimes of sol-gel-processed solid-state dye lasers have been reported and it has been observed that ORMOSILs can exhibit longer lifetimes than in the solution state.…”
