Pervaporation separation of ethyl acetate from aqueous solutions using ZSM-5 filled dual-layer poly(ether-block-amide)/polyethersulfone membrane

Abstract: Dual-layer mixed matrix membranes were prepared by incorporating ZSM-5 zeolite into PEBA as an active layer on the PES membrane as a support layer for pervaporation separation of EAc from the EAc/water mixtures.

“…Static water contact angle (SWCA) values for pristine PEBA and composites (see also Figure S1 ) are shown in Table 2 . SWCA for pristine PEBA is very close to the value reported for a PEBAX ® 2533 membrane also prepared by casting method (81 ± 2° [ 39 ]). PEBA_LDH membranes presented lower SWCA values indicating an increase in surfaces hydrophilicity.…”

“…FT-IR spectra of pristine PEBA and PEBA composites containing Cl-LDHs and the composites containing the NaNAP salt and NAP-LDHs are shown in Figure S4a,b, respectively; the bands tentative assignment is compiled in Table 3. For PEBA (wavenumbers indicated in blue in Figure S4a), the PA portion originates the bands at 3300, 1638, 1541 and 1242 cm −1 , attributed to hydrogen bounded amide group, and also the band at 720 cm −1 assigned to the CH 2 bending of the alkyl portion [28,39,41,[45][46][47][48]. The strong band at 1104 cm −1 is assigned to the C-O-C stretching of ether group (PE portion).…”

“…Estimation of NaABI solubility in saline solution is important to preclude its precipitation in the conditions in which the in vitro ABI release assays were conducted. [299] and close to the value reported in Chapter 7 (Table 7.3) for PEBAX ® 2533 membranes prepared by casting method. PEBA_NaABI membrane presented a lower SWCA value (62 ± 3 °); an expected behavior due to the presence of particles of a salt.…”

“…Among several methods for membrane surface modification, plasma treatment is frequently used in PV due to its ability to change the chemistry of the top surface region of the membrane as a dry method. Surface modification by plasma treatment was used in composite membranes to increase the PV selectivity for the separation of azeotropic methanol/ toluene mixtures, 19 methanol/methyl tert-butyl ether separation by polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) on poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) membranes, 20 the separation of ethyl acetate from water employing a dual-layer mixed matrix membrane, 21 the recovery of ethyl acetate from aqueous solution, 22 the dehydration transport properties of isopropyl alcohol-water in polyvinyl alcohol membranes, 23 and ethanol from water solution mixtures. 24 Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) is an important component within a plasma source, and many studies have been dedicated to understanding the role of VUV and UV radiation in plasma treatment, in particular when polymer surfaces are involved.…”
