Persuasion Strategies Using a Social Robot in an Interactive Storytelling Scenario

Abstract: The behaviour of a person in a given situation can be explained understanding his personality traits. In this sense, the identification of these traits can be a great value to achieve personalised social influence. Although there are several models of persuasion, few of them take into account the person's personality traits. “…Moreover, it is well-known that not all individuals are affected similarly by the same persuasion technique [Moyer-Gusé 2008]. Therefore, discovering the most effective way to subtly influence a person without their realization is crucial [Paradeda 2020]. In our work, we programmed the agent to persuade participants using a combination of facial expressions and emotions.…”

“…Since storytelling is an embodied activity deeply based on the use of gestures and postures, sto-rytellers robots are often proposed instead of virtual agents, most commonly for educational purposes with the result of a greater engagement [41], [66], [57], [21], [9]. Storytelling robots have been also used to raise and foster awareness about sensitive themes [13], and to influence behaviour [55], [56]. In particular, starting from the assumption that the success of a persuasion strategy depends on a reference target group, Paradeda et al implemented in a robot a persuasion model based on a categorization of humans personality traits, with the aim to influence the listener in choosing the actions to perform according to a story plot [55], [56].…”
