Perspectives on the genetic improvement of health- and nutrition-related traits in pea

Abstract: Pea ( Pisum sativum L.) is a widely grown pulse crop that is a source of protein, starch and micronutrients in both human diets and livestock feeds. There is currently a strong global focus on making agriculture and food production systems more sustainable, and pea has one of the smallest carbon footprints of all crops. Multiple genetic loci have been identified that influence pea seed protein content, but protein composition is also important nutritionally. Studies have previously ident… Show more

“…In general, decreased legumin content in seeds of wrinkled types is the result of a destabilization of legumin mRNA by osmotic stress that is caused by the high sugar environment in developing seeds (Casey et al., 1998), which resulted from defective starch biosynthesis genes (Guilfoile, 1997; Kosson et al., 1994). The major determinants of the wrinkled phenotype are mutant alleles at two genes ( r and rb ) which also have effects on starch and legumin biosynthesis (Robinson & Domoney, 2021), supporting the findings of Gueguen and Barbot (1988) and Singhal et al. (2016).…”

“…The peas ( Pisum sativum L.) are the second largest grain legume, which are widely grown in Europe, North America and Asia due to their strong adaptability and high nutritional economic value ( Robinson & Domoney, 2021 ). Peas contain abundant nutritional composition, including protein, dietary fiber, fatty acids, trace elements and phenolics etc, which received increasing attentions in recent years ( Gao et al, 2022 ).…”
