L’importance de l’archéologie des périodes moderne et contemporaine a été longuement débattue par le passé, en particulier vis-à-vis de son intérêt pour l’étude de périodes bien documentées par les sources textuelles. Elle ne fait à présent plus de doute, et cette archéologie doit être considérée comme une discipline à part entière. Elle a cependant tout intérêt à se tourner vers ces mêmes sources textuelles pour enrichir l’étude de la culture matérielle, selon une approche anthropologique. Or, ce dialogue s’avère complexe, face à la fois à la difficulté d’appréhender correctement les sources archivistiques, et à celle d’identifier les documents pouvant être utiles à une étude archéologique donnée. Nous nous proposons en conséquence de donner des clés d’utilisation quant à l’identification, l’analyse et l’exploitation des principaux types de sources textuelles susceptibles d’être incluses dans les études archéologiques sur les périodes moderne et contemporaine. Celles-ci regroupent des archives manuscrites, imprimées, et des sources cartographiques. Toutes doivent faire l’objet d’une lecture critique spécifique nécessitant une formation spécifiquement historienne. Les archives manuscrites documentent principalement la vie matérielle, parfois très concrète, des administrations, seigneuries et des familles ou établissements importants. Les archives d’origine privée et les inventaires après décès sont particulièrement notables, mais se révèlent souvent difficiles à localiser. Certaines institutions indépendantes conservent également des fonds remarquables, en particulier pour les activités industrielles de l’époque contemporaine. Les sources imprimées les plus utilisées sont les ouvrages encyclopédiques du xviiie siècle, mais leur lecture nécessite un recul critique important : ils ne visent souvent pas à représenter la réalité, mais à en montrer une image orientée. Les catalogues et publicités du xixe siècle restent à l’inverse une source trop peu exploitée. Enfin, les cartes et plans peuvent rendre des services très variables principalement en fonction de l’échelle considérée ; la carte de Cassini, malgré son apparente imprécision, est cependant un atout de taille dans l’identification de sites archéologiques potentiels concernant les proto-industries du xviiie siècle. L’usage par les archéologues de ces différents types de sources reste toutefois limité par leur relative difficulté d’accès : des améliorations substantielles en précision des inventaires, en quantité de ressources numérisées, ou encore en constitution de bases de données partagées d’informations issues de ces sources, seraient à souhaiter.
