Perspectives on Research on High Voltage Gas Circuit Breakers

Abstract: The research on high voltage circuit breakers using SF 6 is addressed. The current state of the art in this field is shortly reviewed and future research directions are discussed. These are mainly the radiative energy transport, the understanding and description of ablation processes at the nozzle and contact surfaces, the influence of such vapors on pressure build up and interruption capability, electric breakdown processes, departures from equilibrium, turbulence and the importance of magnetic fields and 3D … Show more

“…1 Copper and its alloys are widely used in contacts on account of their excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. 2 Copper vapor inevitably enters the arcing chamber due to ablation of the contacts, and it may change the composition and properties of the arc and hot gas in the post-arc period.…”

“…3 However, the influence of copper vapor on the interruption capability and dielectric breakdown properties is still not clear. 1 SF 6 has excellent insulation and arc-quenching capabilities. Since the 1960s, it has been widely used in high voltage circuit breakers.…”

“…The PTFE vapor changes the radiative absorption properties, the thermal conductivity and the specific heat of the gas, and therefore, the flux of energy to the wall. Further, as shown in Figure , the presence of PTFE vapor reduces the dielectric strength of the gas mixture . In addition, the pressure in the circuit breaker increases, which affects both the flow in the channel and the dielectric strength.…”

“…However, SF 6 is found to have extremely high global warming potential (approximately 23900 times that of CO 2 ) [2]. Among the alternative gases of SF 6 , CO 2 and its mixtures are considered as the promising options and there has been some real products filled with pure CO 2 gas [3,4].…”
