Perspectives of use of three-layer ferrite-dielectric waveguides for creation of integrated antennas with narrow beam

Abstract

In the report data of experimental research of three-layer ferrite-dielectric waveguides (FDW) in millimeter wave band has been represented. These waveguides are a basis of integrated phased arrays (IPA) with electrical control of beam position. IPA itself is founded on a travelling wave antenna principle. The maximum size of such antenna is determined by losses in the waveguide. The level of these losses for main FDW mode has been experimentally measured. It appeared to be in the range of 0.25-0.27 dB/cm, that is 30% less than values obtained earlier. It is experimentally established, that in existing samples of IPA up to 30% of RF power is radiated by feeding transition. These facts open perspectives of creation of IPA with beamwidth 1.3-1.5 degrees.Indm Terms -ferrite, mm-wave, integrated phased array, electrical scanning, narrow beam.
