Perspectives of multi‐modal contribution of honeybee resources to our life

Abstract: The European honeybee, Apis mellifera, has been introduced to all continents and their products like honey, propolis, royal jelly and beeswax are well known. However, its contribution is not restricted to such direct products but extends into a much wider area. For example, the economic value of seed production by pollination exceeds the above‐mentioned bee products. The application of F1 hybrid is increased to as much as 70% of commercial crops and flowers in Japan and honeybees are important pollinators in t… Show more

“…The flower structure of sesame facilitates cross-pollination wherein, the rate of cross-pollination ranges between 0.5 to 65%, depending on various factors viz., insect activity, environmental conditions, and availability of other vegetation (Rakesh and Lenin 2000). Out of the total pollination activities, more than 85% of activities are performed by insects (Hoshiba and Sasaki 2008) wherein, 80% of the total insect pollination is contributed by bees (Thapa 2006) which serve as the best pollinators. Ashri (2007) reported the rate of cross-pollination between 2.7 and 51.7% in Nigeria.…”

“…H ONEY bees are probably one of the most important insects on the planet. Their importance is not only related to the production of honey, beeswax, royal jelly and propolis but mainly to their key role in pollination services [1] for both spontaneous and cultivated flora. The last decades have seen a large increase in bee mortality [2] which has led to serious ecological and economical consequences.…”

“…Understanding the possible negative impact of metals such as manganese on insects could be important when considering the alarming reports on the continual loss of insect pollinators [2], which include the honeybee [3]. As honeybees bring nectar and pollen back to the nest where it is concentrated before being consumed [4,5], this can lead to the accumulation of contaminants such as metals in both honey and bee tissues [5,6].…”
