German and French football language display tense-aspect-mood (TAM) forms which differ from the TAM use in other genres. In German football talk, the present indicative may replace the pluperfect subjunctive. In French reports of football matches, the imperfective past may occur instead of a perfective past tense-aspect form. We argue that the two phenomena share a functional core and are licensed in the same way, which is a direct result of the genre they occur in. More precisely, football match reports adhere to a precise script and specific events are temporally determined in terms of objective time. This allows speakers to exploit a secondary function of TAM forms, namely, they shift the temporal perspective. We argue that it is on the grounds of the genre that comprehenders predict the deviating forms and are also able to decode them. In various corpus studies, we explore the functioning of these phenomena in order to gain insights into their distribution, grammaticalization and their functioning in discourse. Relevant factors are Aktionsart properties, rhetorical relations and their interaction with other TAM forms. This allows us to discuss coping mechanisms on the part of the comprehender. We broaden our understanding of the phenomena, which have only been partly covered for French and up to now seem to have been ignored in German.

This paper analyzes the temporal relationship between a pluperfect verb in a main clause and a following subordinate clause introduced by mientras (‘while’) with an imperfect verb. The specific lexical and aspectual properties of the components lead to clashing expectations concerning the temporal relationship within the structure. The issues are three-fold. First, the subordinating conjunction lexically expresses the co-temporality of the subordinate clause with regard to another eventuality. Second, this may be possible when the pluperfect verb has an eventive reading, but what happens if it asserts a post-state? Third, the widely recognized discourse structural description (coming from DRT) of an imperfect verb is that its location time includes a previously introduced reference time. However, in traditional terms, the reference time involved in the meaning of a pluperfect verb is posterior to the event the pluperfect verb expresses. We address these issues and present a dataset collected from various corpora which underlines that the temporal relationships within the structure show a surprising variability. We discuss the different possibilities in depth, taking Aktionsart and subject reference into account. We also focus on the theoretical issue of the concept of reference time. On the basis of our data, and counter to the traditional approach, we argue that a temporal discourse structure should account for pluperfect verbs by means of secondary reference times.

The Prominence Value of the Temporal Anchor of Free Indirect Discourse: A Comparison with the Perspectival Center

Free indirect discourse (FID) is a kind of speech or thought representation that lacks specific marking. The entity to whom the speech or thought is attributed (the perspectival center) has been shown to be a contextually available prominent protagonist (see Hinterwimmer, 2019). A shortcoming of the literature is that it ignores the problem of the temporal anchoring of FID events. The present article is dedicated to such anchors. It focuses on their prominence value and discusses their relevant properties. It shows that FID has a strong tendency to be temporally anchored to a prominent time point. Thus, the protagonist and the anchor time point share the trait of prominence.
