Perspective: Fluid Dynamics and Performance of Automotive Torque Converters: An Assessment

Abstract: Experimental investigations by various groups over the past decade have uncovered the main features of the flow in hydraulic torque converters. Measurement techniques include laser and hot wire velocimetry, fast response and conventional five-hole probes, and blade and wall static pressure measurement. In both the pump and turbine, the through flow velocity is high near the pressure surface shell corner while the flow in the suction surface core corner is highly turbulent and may be separated and reversed. The… Show more

“…In addition, compared with the mechanical transmission, HTC possesses a high capacity with relatively compact size and low weight. As a result, HTC has been applied in automatic transmission in automobiles, 1–3 heavy construction machines (such as the wheel loader, 4,5 roadheader 6 and forklift truck 7 ) and transmission system in wind turbine 8–10 up to now.…”

“…One was to investigate the internal flow experimentally. Von Backstrom and Lakshminarayana (1996), Gruver et al (1996) and Watanabe et al (1997) have studied the visualization of the internal flow field with a LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimeter). The other was to use CFD results.…”
