This study examined the mediation effect of creative self-concept on the relationship between Openness to Experience and creative behaviours among university students. Participants in the study completed self-report measures of Openness to Experience, creative behaviours and creative self-concept. Structural equation modelling revealed that, as predicted, Openness to Experience was indirectly related to creative behaviours through creative self-concept. Implications for future research and limitations of the present findings are discussed.

The objective of the present article is a) to explain humans' high creativity in non-mystic and unambiguous terms, b) to evaluate the performance of problem-solving computer programs and c) to make suggestions about future designs of heuristics. Unlike many previous attempts in the past century, we sought inspiration from two sources that had been neglected or excluded from considerations by experts: artificial intelligence and introspections of a number of highly creative individuals, who confessed that they had a penchant for visual thinking. Simonton's chance-configuration model was refurbished accordingly. It is now possible for the refurbished model to explain a number of outstanding puzzles that had eluded our predecessors: a) what intuition is, b) why creators had no idea about their source of inspiration even after the fact, c) a peculiar event happening at the discovery time, known as the "aha" phenomenon, d) a type of accidental discoveries known as serendipity. Moreover, the elusive concept of abduction advanced by philosopher Charles Peirce is actually visual thinking in disguise. Blessed with this new understanding, we could evaluate the performance of a number of problem-solving computer programs from a cognitive point of view. It turned out that the common thread that links human creativity and computerbased creative problem solving is heuristic searching. Recognizing that a digital computer must perform heuristic searching in a digital environment, which is not the most user-friendly environment to do so, we made suggestions about how to circumvent the restrictions without sacrificing the principles in future designs of heuristics.

ResumoA investigação sobre criatividade fornece, há décadas, características sobre a personalidade do indivíduo criativo e sobre o processo, sobretudo cognitivo, de criar. Esses dados têm sido obtidos por estudos empíricos sobre criadores reconhecidos socialmente e pessoas criativas no seu quotidiano. Tornam-se, assim, tais características, úteis ferramentas de análise do trabalho criativo em diversos contextos e, por sua vez, os resultados dessas análises vêm reforçar ou problematizar a teorização prévia. Constitui--se então este ciclo de investigação/acção que caracteriza a ciência. Este artigo poderá ilustrar um desses momentos de interacção, neste caso entre as palavras de quem cria e conceitos interpretativos acerca de criatividade. Analisam-se quatro entrevistas a inventores independentes portugueses, do sexo masculino, provenientes de níveis de escolaridade, experiências profissionais e zonas geográficas diferentes, tomando como grelha de leitura dimensões da personalidade criativa e do processamento cognitivo típico de quem cria. Vão-se, então, intercalando explanações teóricas com frases ilustrativas dos entrevistados, clarificando-se as segundas e reforçando a credibilidade das primeiras. Vai-se tentando contribuir, desta forma, para a consolidação do que constitui a pessoa e o processo criativos, partindo das palavras vivas de criadores.Palavras-chave: criatividade; personalidade criativa; cognição criativa; inventores independentes IntroduçãoHá anos atrás, prefaciei o meu trabalho de doutoramento dizendo 'Não sou criadora.
