Personality, Parental, and Media Influences on Aggressive Personality and Violent Crime in Young Adults

Abstract: Debate remains regarding the interaction between predictor variables for aggression, including family environment, media violence, and personality. The current study examined the contributions of gender and personality, exposure to physical abuse and violence in the family, and exposure to media violence in both television and in video games on violent criminal activity. Data from young adults (n = 355) indicated that personality characteristics and direct physical abuse significantly predicted violent crime. … Show more

“…Whereas aggression refers to the actually performed behaviour as observable acts, aggressiveness refers to the inner disposition that might predict aggressive behaviour, the potential for aggression. Several psychological theories seek to explain increased aggressiveness and aggressive behaviour as a consequence of media violence exposure, though others point out that family violence and innate aggression are more likely to cause trait aggression and real-life violence (e.g., Anderson, 2002;Ferguson, Cruz, Martinez, Rueda, Ferguson, & Negy, 2008;Ferguson, Rueda, Cruz, Ferguson, Fritz, & Smith, 2008). Theories that emphasize the role of human cognition in behaviour generation explain increases in aggressiveness and aggression by human information processing (e.g., priming weapons activates aggressive cognitive structures).…”

“…Although some studies have examined the relation of video gameplay to delinquent and criminal behavior, the results of these studies are mixed. Some researchers report a positive association (e.g., Anderson & Dill, 2000; Holtz & Appel, 2011; Hopf, Huber, & Weiβ, 2008), and others have found no relation (Ferguson & Cricket Meehan, 2010; Ferguson, Cruz, Martinez, Rueda, Ferguson, & Negy, 2008; Ferguson, Rueda, Cruz, Ferguson, Fritz, & Smith, 2008). …”

“…Individuals with a high predisposition to violence are more likely to respond to environmental triggers (e.g., social interactions, stressors) with violence, compared with individuals with a lower predisposition to violence (Ferguson and Dyck 2012 ). Although untested for IPV perpetration, there is some evidence the Catalyst Model predicts other forms of violence perpetration (Ferguson et al 2013 ; Ferguson et al 2008b ; Ferguson et al 2008a ).…”
