Personality modulation of P300 wave recorded within an emotional oddball protocol

Abstract: SummaryObjectives. -Several studies reported that personality modulates responses to emotional stimuli, including cognitive and attentional aspects of the emotional response. The aim of this study was to refine these results while using visual event-related potentials (ERPs) and referring to Cloninger's personality model. Methods. -ERPs were recorded in 46 normal subjects within a visual oddball protocol with checkerboards as the standard stimuli and pictures selected as neutral, pleasant or unpleasant from th… Show more

“…A corresponding process might be elicited in our group Presence : Here, the reception of the ball in the exclusion condition signaled a re-involvement in the game and thereby reduces social threat. According to previous results, however, we have to take into account that a N2 reduction in the group Presence is expected to be associated with a corresponding modulation of the P3 amplitudes [37]. As stated in the result section, this was not the case in our study.…”

“…Within an emotional oddball design, a reduction of N2 amplitude was triggered by pleasant stimuli, and assumed to reflect a reduction in the defense system sensitivity [37]. A corresponding process might be elicited in our group Presence : Here, the reception of the ball in the exclusion condition signaled a re-involvement in the game and thereby reduces social threat.…”

“…In a typical "oddball" paradigm, subjects are instructed to respond when the rare stimuli appear interspersed among frequent stimuli (Briggs and Martin, 2009;Cano et al, 2009;Cutmore et al, 2009;Mardaga and Hansenne, 2009;Lee et al, 2010;Bocquillon et al, 2011). The rare stimuli usually induce a marked enhancement of posterior P300 amplitude, reflecting late inhibitory processes associated to selective conscious attention and working memory for the update of the stimulus context (Nandrino et al, 1996;Polich, 1993Polich, , 2007.…”

“…Other research suggests that low‐HA individuals exhibit attentional bias toward positive stimuli (Taylor et al, 2011). For example, low‐HA adults elicit smaller N2 and larger P3 amplitudes after the presentation of positive pictures compared with neutral pictures (Mardaga and Hansenne, 2009b). Low‐HA adults seem to have automatic attention bias in positive picture processing and allocate more attentional resources to positive stimuli.…”
