Personality and Prejudice: Extension to the HEXACO Personality Model

Abstract: We modelled the associations between the HEXACO dimensions of personality, Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), Right–Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) and prejudice towards dangerous, derogated and dissident groups ( N = 454 undergraduates). Consistent with a Big–Five model, low Openness to Experience predicted RWA and therefore dangerous and dissident group prejudice. As predicted, low Emotionality (and Openness) rather than Agreeableness predicted SDO and therefore derogated and dissident group prejudice. Comparis… Show more

“…It is plausible that the presence of antigay prejudice among individuals endorsing lower openness and stronger RWA fundamentally refiects expression of cognitive closure. Such a pathway is consistent with and expands upon existing research supporting an openness-RWA-prejudice trajectory (e.g., Sibley et al, 2010).…”

“…Structural equation modelling with large data sets assessing all the variables proposed by the DPM has shown good fit for obtained data to the theoretically proposed causal model, with all hypothesized paths clearly significant (Duckitt, 2001;Duckitt et al, 2002;Sibley, Harding, Perry, Asbrock, & Duckitt, 2010;Van Hiel et al, 2007). These studies therefore suggest that the more complex DPM, which incorporates dangerous and competitive worldviews, provides a more complete representation of how basic personality dispositions might causally affect RWA and SDO.…”

“…Participants completed an established 8-item measure, using ratings from 1 ( Strongly disagree ) to 7 ( Strongly agree ), of RWA (e.g., “Our country will be destroyed someday if we do not smash the perversions eating away at our moral fiber and traditional beliefs”; Sibley, Harding, Perry, Asbrock, & Duckitt, 2010) that includes items drawn from the original 30-item measure of RWA (Altemeyer, 1996). Past work has found good internal consistency reliability for this 8-item version (α > .70), and in terms of validity, it has been positively associated with SDO and negatively associated with openness to experience—similar to the longer version of RWA (Sibley et al, 2010).…”
