Personal resilience, cognitive appraisals, and coping: An integrative model of adjustment to abortion.

Abstract: We hypothesized that the effects of personality (self-esteem, control, and optimism) on postabortion adaptation (distress, well-being, and decision satisfaction) would be fully mediated by preabortion cognitive appraisals (stress appraisals and self-efficacy appraisals) and postabortion coping. We further proposed that the effects of preabortion appraisals on adaptation would be fully mediated by postabortion coping. Results of a longitudinal study of 527 women who had first-trimester abortions supported our h… Show more

“…Converging evidence suggests that one such choice, the choice to effortfully regulate one's negative emotions as opposed to letting them unfold naturally, serves a critical protective function for wellbeing (Major et al, 1998;Russo et al, 2012;Sheppes et al, 2014). Although dozens of imaging studies have focused on the brain systems supporting the regulation of emotion Buhle et al, 2014), none has given participants the choice as to whether they will regulate their emotions, instead instructing participants when to regulate versus respond naturally.…”

“…Good self-esteem and perceived control may be thought of as core resources that contribute to a resilient personality (Major et al 1998). Personal resilience is also mediated by an individual's appraisal of stress and the coping mechanisms that are used when confronting stressful situations (Collins in press).…”
