Personal Questionnaire changes and their correlates in a psychotherapeutic group

Abstract: Personal questionnaires were constructed for seven members of a psychotherapy group. Self-reported changes during group sessions and over a period of up to 10 months' treatment were analysed. There was no general pattern of 'improvement' either during sessions or in the longer term. There was evidence suggestive of an inverse relationship between changes during sessions and over the period of the study. Some clinically meaningful relationships were discerned between the present data and repertory grid and verb… Show more

“…The precise meaning of this finding is not clear. Its further investigation involves considering the role of short-term ' worsenings ' in psychotherapy (Shapiro & Hobson, 1972;Shapiro et al, 1975;Shapiro & Shapiro, 1974). SOME PROMISING 'OUTCOME ' STUDIES There are in the literature several instances of promising results in 'relationship' therapy associated with attempts to specify (relatively modest) goals, techniques and therapist and client characteristics.…”

“…A study in which changes in group therapy were evaluated, measuring the intensity of depression, stress, low ability to cope with problems and other stressful feelings, found that in the early stages of psychotherapy there is a ‘deterioration’ and afterwards, an improvement of symptoms (Shapiro, Caplan, Rohde, & Watson, ). Similarly, in groups seen in 12 sessions with a dynamic group psychotherapy programme, a year after therapy the majority of the patients (85%) decreased their dependence on the psychiatric services and showed a considerable change regarding their self‐satisfaction, which was measured with an attitudinal questionnaire (Dick & Wooff, ).…”

“…RHESUS immunoprophylaxis after delivery will protect more than 90 per cent of rhesus negative primiparae from rhesus iso-immunization (Woodrow et al, 1971). Small feto-maternal haemorrhages do, however, occur during normal pregnancy (Zipursky et al, 1963), and may account for the 0.5 per cent of rhesus negative patients who are immunized by a first pregnancy (Shapiro, 1973). A possible cause of fetomaternal haemorrhage in the last trimester of a pregnancy is external cephalic version (ECV).…”
