Personal Narratives as a Predictor of Trait Change and State Fluctuations in Self-Esteem and Life Satisfaction during the Transition from Education to Work

Abstract: Narrative identities are not only a product of lived experiences, but also predict new experiences and developmental outcomes over time. In this study, we examined whether the characteristics of students' narratives about a previous turning point in their lives predicted self-esteem and life satisfaction during their education-to-work transition. We examined predictions of trait change and of stability in state self-esteem and life satisfaction in daily life. Students (aged 24 years on average) in diverse mast… Show more

“…People's interpretations of previous life events might get reactivated and set the path for psychological adjustment to new life events (McLean et al., 2019). A recent study has examined whether turning point narratives predict self‐esteem during the education‐to‐work transition (van Doeselaar & Reitz, 2022). More agentic and redemptive narratives did not predict trait self‐esteem across the 8 months during the transition, but higher levels in narrative agency were associated with greater stability in daily self‐esteem.…”

“…However, a thorough discussion of the role of exemplars in narrative identity and McAdams's broader framework could be the topic of a separate paper and is beyond the scope of the present study. Future research should use narrative identity approaches to further examine the role of social relationships with exemplars in identity formation because these hold great potential to obtain deeper insights into relevant social and psychological processes (van Doeselaar & Reitz, 2023).…”

“…Studies have found small average increases in trait self-esteem during the university-to-work transition. Italian (Filosa et al, 2022) and Dutch (van Doeselaar & Reitz, 2022) participants who transitioned from university to work showed an average increase in trait self-esteem. Only one study that examined German students’ university-to-work transition included a control group (Reitz et al, 2020).…”
