What followed was legislation that extended the protection of personal information in the private sector in Canada, and in 2001, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) came into effect ( Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network 2004 ; Peekhaus 2008 ).
