Personal experience with whole-body, low-dosage, digital X-ray scanning (LODOX-Statscan) in trauma

Abstract: Background: Lodox-Statscan is a whole-body, skeletal and soft-tissue, low-dose X-ray scanner Anterior-posterior and lateral thoraco-abdominal studies are obtained in 3-5 minutes with only about one-third of the radiation required for conventional radiography. Since its approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA, several trauma centers have incorporated this technology into their Advanced Trauma Life Support protocols. This review provides a brief overview of the system, and describes the aut… Show more

“…The Lodox Statscan (Lodox Systems Pty [Ltd] Sandton, South Africa) is a full body, fast acquisition radiographic device that was initially designed in South Africa for the diamond mining industry (Knobel et al, 2006;Evangelopoulos et al, 2009;Douglas et al, 2010). The slot-scanning design offers the ability to generate images with minimal distortion because the Xray source is projected through a collimated fan-beam onto a detector, which moves in synchrony over the patient.…”

“…Use of the Lodox Statscan radiographic images may eliminate the problems associated with metric data collection because of the claim to generate minimal distortion in the yaxis (scan direction). The machine is designed to offer rapid image acquisition (10-13 seconds), to produce a highly detailed whole-body image, and to emit extremely low radiation dosage to patients and operators, thus making the machine safer to use than conventional radiography equipment (Knobel et al, 2006;Evangelopoulos et al, 2009). The Statscan has an X-ray tube mounted on one end of a C-arm and an image receptor on the other end (Figure 3).…”

“…Evangelopoulos et al presented their modified trauma protocol—The Bernese Modified ATLS Protocol—placing Lodox, together with ultrasound, as low-dose imaging adjuncts to the primary survey, allowing for a “ better understanding of patients' injury patterns ” [22]. They also comment that this combination of imaging, before beginning the secondary survey, may allow for a reduction in the number of CT scans required.…”
