Personal Augmented Reality for Information Visualization on Large Interactive Displays

Abstract: Fig. 1. Impressions from our prototype for extending visualizations with Augmented Reality: (a) Two analysts working with our environment, (b) display showing our AR Brushing and Linking, Embedded AR Visualizations, and Extended Axis Views, (c) Hinged Visualizations to improve perception of remote content, and (d) Curved AR Screen providing an overview of the entire display.

“…Conceptual design spaces have been proposed for developing devices and interaction techniques [25] and visualisations in AR [9]. DXR (2018) [123], Niwviw (2018) [145], IATK (2019) [26], VRIA (2020) [15], and U2Vis (2020) [111] are early general-purpose programming toolkits based on Unity (DXR, IATK) and web-technology (VRIA), providing predefined visualisation and glyphs, declarative programming, and previews for rapid prototyping, debugging, and customisation.…”

“…In other related work, Reipschläger et al and Langner et al use AR to augment interaction and visualization on 2D interactive surfaces [23,31,32]. Guggenheimer et al bridge the worlds of non-VR and VR users during gaming with a mobile handheld display that serves as a see-through interface into VR [16].…”

“…The rapid proliferation of powerful, yet affordable, off-the-shelf AR/VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) raises questions about how to better integrate such mixed reality technologies into our realworld computing ecosystems and into the real-world physical spaces they inhabit. Currently, application domains for AR/VR technologies such as visual analytics [23,32,33], remote assistance [2,27,30], training [12,37,38], 3D modeling using 2D & AR simultaneously [31], or prototyping interactive spaces in VR [22] are only beginning to benefit from seamlessly integrating well-established systems such as mouse-or keyboard-operated PCs or interactive surfaces like tablets or large touch screens with AR/VR experiences.…”

“…This demonstrates the benefits of having a range of AR/VR devices, each of which has differnt strengths and weaknesses. Reipschläger et al (2021) used a HoloLens to implement an AR+wallsized display interaction concept that extends visualizations into the space in front of the wall-sized display. The system adjusts views of wall-sized display visualizations based on people's position in front of the display or based on interactions with the visualizations.…”
