Abstract: Upon a wide range of stress conditions (e.g., nutrient, antibiotic, oxidative), a subpopulation of bacterial cells known as persisters survive by halting metabolism. These cells resuscitate rapidly to reconstitute infections once the stress is removed and nutrients are provided.
