Persistent Racial and Sex Disparities in Outcomes After Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Abstract: Objective:The purpose of this study was to assess the temporal trends in 30-day mortality by race group for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) between 2011 and 2018 and to investigate the effect of race and sex on postoperative outcomes after CABG.Summary Background Data: Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of death in the United States with studies demonstrating increased morbidity and mortality for black and female patients undergoing surgery. “…In comparison to Caucasians, African-Americans are more likely to experience HF and have greater risk of death and complications when hospitalized due to HF or when they undergo cardiac surgery. 21,22 African-Americans were primarily located in the most deprived neighborhoods; however, this did not appear to impact post-LVAD outcomes. Because LVAD implantation is a life-saving therapy that can improve quality of life among those with stage D HF, our findings indicate LVAD implantation leads to African-Americans having no worse clinical outcomes, even though their risk of complications and adverse events is higher based on race.…”

“…In a large retrospective analysis of the STS database, in which over 1 million isolated CABG procedures were performed between 2011-2018, higher mortality was observed in female patients compared to male patients (OR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.21 to 1.30). 8 Based on these numbers it is estimated that reduction of mortality in women to their male counterparts could save over 1200 lives every year.…”
