Persistent primitive trigeminal arteries (PTA) and its variant (PTAV): analysis of 103 cases detected in 16,415 cases of MRA over 3 years

Abstract: We have identified details of both PTA/PTAV. The incidence of PTA was similar to previous studies, and the co-existence of cerebral aneurysm was also similar when compared to patients in the general population without PTA or PTAV.

“…Although the spatial resolution of conventional angiography is better than that of MR angiography, the procedure was invasive and presumed biased. Improved spatial resolution of MR angiography has led to several recently reported MR angiographic studies of PTAs and PTA variants [16,25]. O'uchi et al [16] reported a 0.29% incidence of PTAs and 0.34%, of PTA variants, on MR angiography; our results were almost equal for PTA but lower for PTA variants.…”

“…A cerebellar artery that arises from the precavernous segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA) without connecting to the basilar artery is regarded as a PTA variant [7,20,21,24,25]. Rarely, a cerebellar artery arises from a lateral-type PTA [1,16,21,28]. We report our institutional findings on magnetic resonance (MR) angiography of PTA and PTA variants, especially with regard to their incidence and classification.…”

“…MRAs reported an incidence of 3.9% of cerebral aneurysms in patients harboring a PTA (58). Cerebral aneurysms associated with PTA have been reported to occur in relation to the bifurcations formed by the PTA and either the ICA (40,46,57) or the BA (45,86).…”

“…Uchino et al [24] reported that out of 3626 MR angiographic examinations, 12 (0.34%) cases of PTA and 6 (0.17%) cases of PTA variants were found. Another large study examining 16,415 MR angiographies revealed that the incidence of both PTA and its variants was 0.68% [18].…”
