Magnetic materials with noncollinear spin textures are promising for spintronic applications. To realize practical devices, control over the length and energy scales of such spin textures is imperative. The chiral helimagnets Cr1/3NbS2 and Cr1/3TaS2 exhibit analogous magnetic-phase diagrams with different real-space periodicities and field dependence, positioning them as model systems for studying the relative strengths of the microscopic mechanisms giving rise to exotic spin textures. Although the electronic structure of the Nb analogue has been experimentally investigated, the Ta analogue has received far less attention. Here, we present a comprehensive suite of electronic structure studies on both Cr1/3NbS2 and Cr1/3TaS2 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory. We show that bands in Cr1/3TaS2 are more dispersive than their counterparts in Cr1/3NbS2, resulting in markedly different Fermi wavevectors. The fact that their qualitative magnetic phase diagrams are nevertheless identical shows that hybridization between the intercalant and host lattice mediates the magnetic exchange interactions in both of these materials. We ultimately find that ferromagnetic coupling is stronger in Cr1/3TaS2, but larger spin–orbit coupling (and a stronger Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction) from the heavier host lattice ultimately gives rise to shorter spin textures.

The addition of metal intercalants into the van der Waals gaps of transition metal dichalcogenides has shown great promise as a method for controlling their functional properties. For example, chiral helimagnetic states, current-induced magnetization switching, and a giant valley-Zeeman effect have all been demonstrated, generating significant renewed interest in this materials family. Here, we present a combined photoemission and densityfunctional theory study of three such compounds: V NbS 1/3 2 , Cr NbS 1/3 2 , and Fe NbS 1/3 2 , to investigate chemical trends of the intercalant species on their bulk and surface electronic structure. Our resonant photoemission measurements indicate increased hybridization with the itinerant NbS 2 -derived conduction states with increasing atomic number of the intercalant, leading to pronounced mixing of the nominally localized intercalant states at the Fermi level. Using spatially and angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show how this impacts surface-termination-dependent charge transfers and leads to the formation of new dispersive states of mixed intercalant-Nb character at the Fermi level for the intercalant-terminated surfaces. This provides an explanation for the origin of anomalous states previously reported in this family of compounds and paves the way for tuning the nature of the magnetic interactions in these systems via control of the hybridization of the magnetic ions with the itinerant states.

The surface of three-dimensional materials provides an ideal and versatile platform to explore quantum-confined physics. Here, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of Na-intercalated CrTe 2 , a van der Waals antiferromagnet, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The measured band structure deviates from the calculation of bulk NaCrTe 2 but agrees with that of ferromagnetic monolayer CrTe 2 . Consistently, we observe unexpected exchange splitting of the band dispersions, persisting well above the Neél temperature of bulk NaCrTe 2 . We argue that NaCrTe 2 features a quantumconfined 2D ferromagnetic state in the topmost surface layer due to strong ferromagnetic correlation in the CrTe 2 layer. Moreover, the exchange splitting and the critical temperature can be controlled by surface doping of alkali-metal atoms, suggesting the feasibility of tuning the surface ferromagnetism. Our work not only presents a simple platform for exploring tunable 2D ferromagnetism but also provides important insights into the quantum-confined lowdimensional magnetic states.
