Persistent dorsal ophthalmic artery and ophthalmic artery arising from the middle meningeal artery diagnosed by MR angiography at 3 T

Abstract: Per OA, the prevalence of persistent dorsal OA was 0.42% and of OA arising from the MMA, 1.45%, with a tendency toward right-side predominance. OA arising from the MMA can be seen bilaterally; preprocedural knowledge of this variation is important because of the danger associated with endovascular procedures of the external carotid system when the OA arises from the MMA.

“…Anomalous origins can result from anomalies in development, annexation, or disappearance of embryonic OAs and the orbital branch of the stapedial artery. 21 Examples of these variants include the OA originating from the anterior cerebral artery, 11 the cavernous portion, 35 the middle meningeal artery, 11,44 or the basilar artery. 37 The incidence of an anomalous origin of the OA was 1.89% in this study.…”

“…In such a case, the normal OphA is usually small in caliber and supplies only the central retinal artery, and the OphA arising from the cavernous ICA is relatively large and supplies structures in and around the orbit. The most frequent type of anomalous origin of the OphA is the middle meningeal artery, reportedly constituting 1.45 % of OphAs [15]. Other rare types of anomalous origin of the OphA have included the basilar artery [13], posterior communicating artery in the case of ICA agenesis [10], and the inter-optic course of the ACA [2].…”

“…The ophthalmic artery (OphA) usually arises from the internal carotid artery (ICA) just distal to the dural ring, rarely originates from the cavernous segment of the ICA [15], and extremely rarely arises from the A1 segment of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA). Several cases of OphA of ACA origin found during angiography or surgery have been reported [3,5,8].…”
