Persistent aryl hydrocarbon receptor inducers increase with altitude, and estrogen-like disrupters are low in soils of the Alps

Abstract: Low bioassay responses with a higher relative amount of ER disrupters than AhR inducers were detected, indicating the higher abundance of estrogen-like than persistent dioxin-like compounds in these forested areas [corrected].

“…The triolein was removed by passing the residue through a C18 SPE cartridge for which acetonitrile was used as eluting solvent. The extract was blown to dryness with a gentle nitrogen flow and then the residue was dissolved in a mixture of DMSO/isopropanol 4:1(v/v) for Micro-EROD bioassay (Levy et al, 2011).…”

“…The volumes of the extract solutions were reduced to about 2 mL using a vacuum rotary evaporator. The residue was further purified through a C18 SPE cartridge for which a mixture of acetonitrile/dichloromethane 95:5 was used as eluting solvent (Levy et al 2011). Finally, the extract was gently blown to dryness with nitrogen and redissolved in 200 μL DMSO/ isopropanol 4:1 (v /v ) to be ready for EROD and yeast bioassays.…”
