Persistence of the nematicide fluensulfone in potato (Solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum) beds under field conditions

Abstract: As part of a broader study to evaluate the efficacy of fluensulfone for control of the potato cyst nematode, Globodera pallida, two field experiments in Shropshire (at Woodcote and Howle in 2010 and 2011, respectively) England, were used to monitor the persistence of fluensulfone in potato beds treated with Nimitz 15G® (fluensulfone) at 27 kg ha−1. Fluensulfone dissipated at similar rates in the two fields, with a trend best described by a sigmoidal curve. The time to 50% dissipation (DT50) was 24.3 days at Wo… Show more

“…Fluensulfone has a soil half-life up to 36 days (Ludlow, 2015b, Table 2). Under field conditions, fluensulfone had a 50% dissipation rate (DT 50 ) between 23.7 and 24.3 days depending on soil type, similar to that of fosthiazate (Norshie et al, 2017). When treated with similar doses of fluensulfone, Caenorhabditis elegans and M. incognita respond with immobility and eventual death (Kearn et al, 2014).…”

“…The difference in sorption of the technical-grade and the granular product is attributable to limited availability of fluensulfone in the solution for uptake. Indeed, a granular formulation releases active substances gradually (Kile et al, 1999) and, was evident for Nimitz 15G (Norshie et al, 2017). The lower sorption exhibited here would suggest that studies involving the technicalgrade could over-estimate sorption in potato beds receiving a treatment of this formulation.…”

“…These results, however, indicate that fluensulfone may be easily leached. Even though this highlights environmental consequences, our study on persistence in field soil (Norshie et al, 2017) indicated that it may not pose a hazard to the environment.…”

“…There are different forms of application; however, the most recommended are drip injection or broadcast by mechanical incorporation with a single application 7 days before planting [129]. It has been estimated that its half-life in soil is 36 days, with a dissipation rate (DT 50 ) of between 20 and 50 days, which can vary depending on the type of soil and environmental conditions [134,135].…”
