Persistence of impaired health status of Q fever patients 4 years after the first Dutch outbreak

Abstract: A significant proportion of Q fever patients from the first Dutch Q fever outbreak in 2007 showed impairment in health status up to 1 year after infection. Interested in whether this decrease in health status persisted, we set out to determine the health status in the same cohort of patients, 4 years after primary infection and to compare health status scores at the individual patient level between 1 and 4 years follow-up. Health status was assessed with the Nijmegen Clinical Screening Instrument (NCSI). Patie… Show more

“…In these studies, patients with possible, probable, or proven "chronic Q fever" were excluded. Limonard et al investigated the health status of 82 patients with a past primary infection at 1 and 4 years of follow-up and found a higher frequency of severely impaired general quality of life and undue fatigue (50% and 46%, respectively) than in an adjusted control group (645,646). These proportions were stable through the years.…”

“…These studies confirmed that Q-fever had a significant impact on the level of fatigue and QoL measured in the first 3 months up to 26 months after onset of Q-fever compared to either controls or normative data [ 11 16 ]. Studies also showed that Q-fever patients still experienced a significant impact on fatigue and QoL 4 years after onset of Q-fever compared to normative data or a healthy control group [ 14 , 18 ]. Other studies showed significant improvements over time after a follow-up of 24 months and even absence of significant differences on the level of fatigue and QoL between persons with or without a history of C .…”

“…Cardiovascular disease are long-term sequelae (Parker, NR, Barralet & Bell 2006) and myocarditis is the leading cause of death in humans (Fournier, Pierre-Edouard et al 2001). Four years after the initial Q fever infection, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was found in 46% Q fever patients from the 2007 Q fever outbreak (Limonard et al 2016).…”
