Persistence of Coulomb focusing during ionization in the strong-field regime

Abstract: We consider the recollision process occurring during the ionization of a neutral atom or molecule by a very strong linearly polarized near-infrared laser field. We find that Coulomb focusing persists even when the Coulomb field of the ion is barely noticeable compared with the laser field. We focus on the consequences of Coulomb focusing for trajectories that maximize the energy exchange upon recollision and thus determine the high-harmonic cutoff. Delayed recollisions proliferate in the strong field regime an… Show more

“…Therefore, the competition between the Coulomb potential and laser interaction is always present even at high intensity, as shown in Ref. [24]. In summary, as expected for large ellipticities (i.e., close to CP), there is a very good agreement between the CCSFA [Eqs.…”

“…Coulomb focusing and the related caustic structures due to multiple recollisions of electrons [39][40][41] carry important information on the rescattering dynamics [42][43][44][45][46][47][48]. These dynamics have not been observed in experiments so far, because the rescattered electrons are embedded within a large background of direct photoelectrons.…”

“…In other words, the SFA cutoff for an initially monochromatic field of κ SFA = 3.17U p becomes κ SFA = 3.69U p after propagation to z = 0.37 mm due to the accumulated radiation at other frequencies, and this causes the increase in the cutoff energy. Nevertheless, the Coulomb interaction near τ m , though brief, is critical for making these higher energy recollisions accessible to the electrons [61]. Indeed, the only way that the trajectory shown in Fig.…”
