Peroxisomes and sexual development in fungi

Abstract: Peroxisomes are versatile and dynamic organelles that are essential for the development of most eukaryotic organisms. In fungi, many developmental processes, such as sexual development, require the activity of peroxisomes. Sexual reproduction in fungi involves the formation of meiotic-derived sexual spores, often takes place inside multicellular fruiting bodies and requires precise coordination between the differentiation of multiple cell types and the progression of karyogamy and meiosis. Different peroxisoma… Show more

“…Peroxisomes also possess specific functions in fungi. They participate in secondary metabolite biosynthesis that produces such as penicillins, AK-toxin and aflatoxin as well as in sexual reproduction (Bartoszewska et al, 2011;Pieuchot and Jedd, 2012;Peraza-Reyes and Berteaux-Lecellier, 2013;Stehlik et al, 2014). Remarkably, the integrity of peroxisomes is important during the infection processes of phytopathogenic fungi.…”

“…In this category, we identified the PEX3 peroxisomal biogenesis factor (Pa_7_8080). The crucial role of β-oxidation and the glyoxylate cycle during sexual development has already been documented [60]. We also found a VelvetA-like-1 protein (VeA, Pa_3_6550) [61].…”

“…As such, we identified a putative cruciform DNA recognition protein (Pa_2_440), an ATPase involved in DNA repair (Pa_6_4260), a SIK1-like RNA-binding protein (Pa_5_12950) and the telomere length regulator protein rif1 (Pa_1_3890). In mammals as in yeast, Rif1 is required for checkpoint-mediated cell cycle arrest in response to DNA damage [60].…”

“…In most fungi, β-oxidation of fatty acids and biotin biosynthesis occurs only in peroxisomes. Additionally, peroxisomes are involved in homeostasis of reactive oxygen species and in sexual development [51][52][53].…”
