Peroxidase isoenzyme patterns of resistant and susceptible wheat leaves following stem rust infection

Abstract: Near-isogenic lines of the wheat {Triticutn aestivum L.) cultivar Prelude, carrying eitber tbe sr5 gene for susceptibility or tbe Sr5 allele for resistance to stem rust {Puccinia gratttinis Pers. f.sp. tritici Erics. & E. Henn.) ' •^' ere inoculated witb race 32 of tbe fungus wbicb possesses tbe P5 gene for-avirulence. Enzyme extracts prepared 'It different times after inoculation were separated by non-denaturing gel electropboresis and tbe gels were stained '"'-peroxidase acti\-ity using different substrates.… Show more

“…2). These results were in agreement with those obtained by Flott et al (1989) and Mohammadi and Kazemi (2002), who reported an increase in POX activity in susceptible wheat plants (cv. Falat) after inoculation with F. graminearum in the milk stage.…”

“…Increases in activities of PO-As have been correlated with resistance in both dicots (25) and moncots (5). In both of these cases, lignification was thought to have a role in the defense response.…”

“…An increase in PO activity has been associated with infection in numerous studies (5,6,17,26,33), and some attribute this to a general resistance response (16,(23)(24)(25)30). However, only a few reports link the accumulation of PO isoenzymes to race-specific resistance (17,26,33).…”

“…Our studies indicate that suberization might be important in resistance. Higher levels of peroxidase activities have been associated with resistance to other pathogens (10,12,22,26,29). The nature of the reactions such peroxidases catalyze are not known.…”
