Perovskite Catalysts for Biomass Valorization

Abstract: Biomass is a widely used renewable energy source, whose uptake is growing due to concerns about the impact of anthropogenic fossil fuel combustion on climate change. Waste biomass-derived fuels and chemicals offer a partial solution to reducing global reliance on fossil fuels in pursuit of Net Zero 2050 CO2 emissions, in concert with environmental, health, and economic benefits. Biorefineries aim to convert biomass resources such as forestry and agricultural waste into diverse product streams, akin to the proc… Show more

“…7 Their high thermal and hydrothermal stability, high oxygen mobility, and controllable physicochemical properties enable them to be explored as potential materials for catalytic applications, in particular biomass transformation. 8 Although considerable work was focused on their redox characteristics, catalytic application based on acid-base properties along with their redox potential is a subject of study. Our literature survey reveals that they have proven to be highly effective in selective oxidation, catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds, oxidative reforming of hydrocarbons, and decomposition reactions.…”

“…Perovskite (ABO 3 ) is a versatile mixed oxide with tunable compositions . Controlled reduction of perovskites offers tremendous opportunities to adjust the oxidation state of A and B metal species and tailor surface properties to meet on-demand requirements in specific applications . At present, perovskites as platform materials have been widely used in the field of catalysis, especially in catalytic hydrogenations.…”

“…Perovskite oxides are widely used as catalysts in various chemical reactions due to their excellent redox properties, thermal stability, and tunable surface properties. They are employed in applications such as automotive catalytic converters, where they help reduce harmful emissions by catalyzing the oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and the reduction of nitrogen oxides [16][17]. Perovskites also play a role in environmental remediation.…”
