Perovskite at high P‐T conditions: An in situ synchrotron X ray diffraction study of NaMgF3 perovskite

Abstract: The lattice distortion and structural phase transition of NaMgFa perovskite (Neighborite) have been studied using synchrotron X ray powder diffraction at high pressure and temperature. Changes in the unit cell dimensions of the perovskite are determined by conventional peak indexing and least squares routines. The stress field within the high‐pressure cell assembly is analyzed, and the yield strength of the NaMgF3 perovskite is determined at high P and T. The pressure‐ and temperature‐induced dimensional chang… Show more

“…-m ↔ Pnma transition in NaMgF 3 is another example of a perovskite transition with tricitical character (Zhao et al 1993a(Zhao et al , 1993b(Zhao et al , 1994. It appears that the renormalized fourth order coefficients are generally small and that the sixth order coefficients are significant.…”

“…Considering the cubic ↔ orthorhombic transition in NaMgF 3 , the shear strain e 4 scales with temperature as e 4 2 ∝ |T c -T| for T → T c but as e 4 ∝ |T c -T| for T << T c (Fig. 15a, and see strain plots of Zhao et al 1993bZhao et al , 1994Carpenter et al 1998a). This change is consistent with a temperature-dependence for the coefficients that are fourth order in q if at high temperatures the coefficient is large but then becomes smaller as temperature is reduced.…”

“…In addition, NaMgF 3 transitions to a CaIrO 3 -type post-perovskite structure at high pressure, to tetragonal and cubic phases at high temperature, and dissociates at high pressures and temperatures just as bridgmanite does (e.g. Zhao et al, 1994;Umemoto et al, 2006;Umemoto and Wentzcovitch, 2011).…”

“…Upon heating, deviatoric stress in the sample decreases drastically and eventually diminishes as the temperature rises (Weidner et al, 1992;Zhao et al, 1994). The electric current from an AC power supply runs through the platinum wires and the cylinder/disk carbon furnace and heats up the sample quite efficiently.…”
