Peroneal Tendons Subluxation

Abstract: Subluxation of the peroneal tendons is uncommon. It occurs especially in skiing, soccer, basketball, rugby, ice skating, judo, sprint, water-skiing, mountaineering, and gymnastics. We present an overview of the injury, with the classification commonly used. Many surgical techniques have been described to manage recurrent subluxation of the peroneal tendons, but only Level IV/Grade C evidence has been produced. Thus, randomized controlled trials are necessary to determinate the best surgical management method. … Show more

“…To our knowledge, no previous systematic review has been published addressing the surgical treatment of peroneal tendon dislocation. A review from Oliva et al [ 26 ] demonstrated that reattachment of the SPR is the most appropriate technique when utilizing an anatomic approach. This study, however, was not based on systematic analysis of collected studies and did not provide sufficient data to substructure their conclusions.…”

“…We reported for the first time in literature the formation of a pseudoaneurysm of the peroneal artery after an anterior ankle arthroscopy. The peroneal artery origins from the posterior tibial artery, 2-3 cm under the tendinous arch of the soleus running medially to the fibula until the tibio-tarsal joint 12,13 . Five cases of pseudoaneurysm of peroneal branches are described in literature after an ankle sprain 7 .…”

“…However, Oliva et al has challenged that these new subtypes are actually grade 1 injuries. Oliva et al 9 proposes that the SPR cannot remain intact during such a forceful anatomic shift.…”
