The Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Capitanian Stage was proposed in 1999 and defined by the first appearance datum (FAD) of the conodont Jinogondolella postserrata within the lineage J. aser-rata→J. postserrata→J. shannoni at Nipple Hill in West Texas, USA. Despite its widespread recognition for more than two decades, the official GSSP paper was not published, nor have its index conodont fossils been properly documented. At Nipple Hill, only the uppermost 0.5 m of the Pinery Member belongs to the Capitanian Stage. J. postserrata first appears at 19.8 m above the base of the auxiliary Frijole section. Based on U-Pb CA-ID-TIMS geochronology of ash beds from the GSSP area, the base of the Capitanian Stage has been constrained at 264.28 ± 0.16 Ma. Magnetostratigraphy suggests that the Illawarra Reversal is located slightly below the base of the Capitanian Stage. Strontium isotope chemostratigraphy generally shows a continuous decline in the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratio throughout the Capitanian in the GSSP area, but all ratios are higher than the Capitanian minimum of ~0.7068. δ 13 C carb profile shows no distinct excursion around the Wordian/Capitanian boundary interval. Detailed correlation suggests that the middle-upper part of the fusuline-based Midian Stage correlates with the Capitanian Stage.

The youngest Paleozoic vertebrate-bearing continental deposits of North America are Middle Permian (Guadalupian) in age and occur in the Chickasha Formation (El Reno Group) of central Oklahoma and the lithostratigraphically lower San Angelo Formation (Pease River Group) of North-Central Texas. Although regarded originally as Guadalupian, these deposits have been assigned recently to the Early Permian on the basis of marine fossils and questionable lithostratigraphic extrapolations from marine to continental strata. A review of ammonoid genera recovered from the Blaine Formation, which overlies both the Chickasha and San Angelo in Oklahoma and Texas, shows that they range globally in age from the Early to Late Permian but most occur in the Guadalupian or Middle Permian. A modest but intensively studied paleobotanical record of compression fossils from the San Angelo, as well as palynomorphs in rocks associated with the Chickasha, presents an unquestionably Middle to Late Permian flora dominated by voltzian conifers. The Chickasha and San Angelo vertebrate assemblages are overwhelmingly dominated by large caseid synapsids and indicate a biostratigraphic signal of early Guadalupian. The occurrence of the tupilakosaurid temnospondyl Slaugenhopia, the parareptile Macroleter, and the eureptile Rothianiscus suggest a Roadian age (lowermost Guadalupian) given the global records of closely related forms. These plant and vertebrate assemblages contrast sharply with those of underlying Cisuralian rocks of the Hennessey Formation of Oklahoma and the Clear Fork Formation of Texas, both of which are much more fossiliferous than those of the Guadalupian in the region. A barren interval of up to 300 m in thickness separates these fossil-bearing intervals. This true void, first reported a half century ago by E.C. Olson, has not been recognized in recent biochronology studies. These findings, as well as those of other vertebrate paleontologists who have evaluated the San Angelo and Chickasha data by other means, strongly refute the notion of “Olson’s Gap” as currently entertained.

The use of boundary stratotypes to define chronostratigraphic units began in the 1960s, and, in the 1980s, these were called Global Stratotype Sections and Points (GSSPs). Approximately two-thirds of the GSSPs of the bases of the Phanerozoic stage (71 of 102 in September 2018) have been ratified by the International Commission on Stratigraphy. However, this apparent progress toward precise definition of a Phanerozoic chronostratigraphic timescale is underlain by multiple problems of philosophy and methodology that include: (1) inconsistency in how chronostratigraphic units are being named and defined; (2) arbitrary decisions as to GSSP level, many based on arbitrarily chosen points in hypothetical chronomorphoclines of microfossils; (3) hierarchical reductionism, which makes the stage base the same as the base of the series, system, erathem and eonothem, thereby trivializing the significance of the boundaries of these larger chronostratigraphic units; (4) stability achieved by the non-scientific process of designating a GSSP once ratified as immutable; (5) the unworkable concept of a standard set of global stages; (6) the fallacy that a GSSP location can somehow define a recognizable (correlateable) global time line; (7) imprecision in GSSP correlation because the primary signals are largely single taxon biotic events that are inherently diachronous due to the limitations of fossil distributions by sampling, facies and provincialism; and (8) the politics of the International Commission on Stratigraphy and the small groups of specialists who select and vote on GSSPs. Chronostratigraphy needs to return to the concepts of natural chronostratigraphy, with improvements based on modern techniques like quantitative biostratigraphy. We need to standardize the chronostratigraphic scale, and the International Commission on Stratigraphy needs to rethink the philosophy and practices by which this is being done, so that we can move forward to produce the most informative chronostratigraphy possible based on a consistent methodology that allows the updating and obtaining of high accuracy and precision as new data become available.
