Permeability analysis of fractured vuggy porous media based on homogenization theory

Abstract: Based on the characteristics of fractured vuggy porous media, a novel mathematical model was proposed to model fluid flow in such media on fine scale, i.e., the discrete fracture-vug network model. The new model consists of three systems: porous rock system, fracture system, and vug system. The fractures and vugs are embedded in porous rock, and the isolated vugs could be connected via the discrete fracture network. The flow in porous rock and fractures follows Darcy's law, and the vugs system is free fluid re… Show more

“…However, in actual formation, some fractures may be barriers that prevent flow across them, e.g., faults and fractures filled with mud [26,27]. Therefore, establishing a common and practical fluid flow mathematical model and corresponding numerical simulation method is significant and imperative.…”

“…Chai and Xu [84] and Hu et al [85] pointed out that seepage is unfavorable for dam global stability, especially the sudden change of water level would cause the variation of seepage field in the foundation rock, which is more like to introduce the local damage in rock foundation. Yang et al [86] and Huang et al [87] studied the seepage-stress coupling with meso-mechanics approach and obtained some meaningful results. In [88][89][90][91][92], some approaches were proposed to handle the temperature-seepagestress coupling problem, and some progresses were obtained both for engineering practice and further research.…”

“…The discontinuum approach, on the other hand, better represents such complex flow patterns because it characterizes them as discrete features with all the variety of their distinct geology. Huang et al (2010) were the first to propose and use a discontinuum approach called discrete fracture-vug network (DFVN) in modeling fractured-vuggy reservoir. In their work they proposed a mathematical flow model of DFVN and based on a two-scale homogenization limit theory, they obtained a microscopic Darcy's law that governs the flow in the media on coarse scale.…”
