Perme ICU Mobility Score (Perme Score) and the ICU Mobility Scale (IMS): translation and cultural adaptation for the Spanish language

Abstract: Objective: To perform translation, cultural adaptation and inter-rater reliability of the Spanish versions of the Perme Intensive Care Unit Mobility Score and IMS tools in ICU patients. Methods: Translation and validation study between November 2016 and July 2017, following the COSMIN Protocol's recommendations. Two couples of physiotherapists with the role of observer/rater applied both scales in 150 patients upon admission and discharge of a medical-surgical ICU from a private hospital in Colombia. The samp… Show more

“…The main strengths of this study are related to a large number of patients, prospective design, and being the first study that evaluates the MDC and responsiveness of the Perme Score. Additionally, the study's methodological strengths are related to the randomization by incomplete balanced blocks in order to establish the role of evaluator/observer, ensuring a similar number of patients in each pair, and to the strategies implemented to reduce the possibility of information and selection bias (Luna et al, 2018).…”

“…These are factors that differ between clinicians and could influence the scores. This is a common scenario in an ICU where different clinicians assess the patient at different times The main researcher and the ICU work team were masked (Luna et al, 2018).…”

“…Comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, malignancy, congestive heart failure (CHF), and chronic kidney, liver and pulmonary diseases, which were assessed by the Charlson Comorbidity Index (Deyo et al, 1992[ 15 ]; Quan et al, 2005[ 57 ]). Activity and mobility as measured by the Perme ICU mobility score (IMS), reflects the patient's mobility status at one particular moment in time (Perme et al, 2014[ 54 ]; Wilches Luna et al, 2018[ 79 ]). Data was collected by a trained physical therapist.…”

“…There are different types of barriers such as patient-related, structural, cultural, and process-related [ 10 ], but the potential barriers item in the Perme Score only relates to patient-related barriers. The Perme Score has high inter- and intra-rater reliability and has been translated and culturally adapted to different languages such as Portuguese [ 11 ], German [ 12 ], and Spanish [ 13 ]. In clinical practice, it is important to recognize the burden of potential barriers to mobility activities in the ICU to facilitate safe and timely implementation of a mobility program [ 9 ].…”
