Permanganate Oxidation of Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Recycle Collection Tank (RCT) Simulants – Protocol Runs for Nominal and Chemical Process Cell (CPC) Foamover Conditions

Abstract: Thanks to the personnel in the laboratories that supported these tests including Whitney Riley, Kandice Miles, and Kim Wyszynski in the Process Science Analytical Laboratory and Tom White in SRNL's Analytical Development. Thanks to Bill Holtzscheiter, Grace Chen, Stephanie Harrington, and Christie Sudduth for their support in planning these experiments. Jack Zamecnik thanks Dan Lambert and Matt Siegfried for completing this report upon his retirement from SRNL.

“…Additional work is underway to advance the sodium permanganate oxidation process for DWPF implementation. 26 This testing will include processing with prototypic RCT simulant, worst case testing (i.e., a foam-over in the CPC or an entrainment event in the melter), and radioactive waste (or large scale) testing.…”

“…The simulant used represent the transfer from the SMECT condensate feed and/or the OGCT onto the RCT with heel [6]. A 50 wt.% hydroxide addition for caustic adjustment prior to addition of permanganate was poured.…”

“…Scoping studies were performed to evaluate sodium permanganate and Fenton's reagent (i.e., iron catalyzed hydrogen peroxide) for destroying the glycolate. From the results of testing, oxidation by sodium permanganate was chosen over Fenton's reagent [6]. SRR requested corrosion testing to evaluate the materials that will be exposed to sodium permanganate, as part of a Technical Task Request (TTR) [7].…”

“…The SRS Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) is currently planning to implement an ambient temperature alkaline permanganate process for the oxidation of glycolate and this proposed approach is based on a similar process (Zamecnik et al 2019;Siegfried et al 2019;Nash and Siegfried 2020).…”
