Permanently antistatic and high transparent PMMA terpolymer: Compatilizer, antistatic agent, and the antistatic mechanism

Abstract: Permanently antistatic and high transparent PMMA terpolymer, P(MMA‐co‐HPA‐co‐SPMA), were reported in this paper, providing a new method to significantly improve the antistatic properties of PMMA without sacrificing transparency. 2‐Hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA) was chosen as a kind of compatilizer because of the good compatibility with both methyl methacrylate (MMA) and sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMA), a potential antistatic agent with a strong hydrophilic group. The mechanical and optical propert… Show more

“…The band at 2885 cm −1 indicates CH2 stretching vibrations [ 31 ]. The bands at 1062 cm −1 and 1408 cm −1 indicate symmetric and asymmetric sulfonate stretch [ 32 , 33 , 34 ]. All these results strongly assist the successful grafting of hydrophilic PSPMK polymer brushes onto a PA membrane via ATRP by using the “Grafting from” approach.…”

“…However, the surface of PMMA tends to accumulate charge and adsorb impurities in the air, due to its low antistatic properties. It results in a decline of the product's optical performance, limiting its applications in 5G, precision instruments, and electronic equipment in aerospace, not to mention the chance of causing static discharge fires and explosions 9–11 . Therefore, it is of great significance to develop antistatic and transparent PMMA with excellent comprehensive performances.…”

“…When the additional amount of acryl phosphate is 1.0 wt%, the surface resistivity of PMMA can be reduced to 10 8 Ω/sq, with better washing resistance that meets the antistatic modification requirements. In the early stage of our research, the antistatic agent 3‐sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMA) and the compatibilizer hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA) were introduced into PMMA by ternary copolymerization to prepare a permanently antistatic and highly transparent terpolymer P(MMA‐ co ‐HPA‐ co ‐SPMA) 10 . When the SPMA content is 0.72 wt%, the surface resistance of the material can be reduced to 10 9 Ω/sq, which provides a new method for PMMA to improve the antistatic performance without sacrificing transparency.…”

“…The lipophilic groups are adsorbed on the surface of the materials, while the hydrophilic groups are arranged towards the air side to absorb water molecules in the environment. These water molecules form a monomolecular conductive layer that can reduce surface resistivity [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Different antistatic agents were prepared based on this principle.…”
