Permanent marking in an endangered species: physiological response to hot branding in Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus)

Abstract: Identification of individual animals is important in order to evaluate age-specific survival rates, onset of sexual maturity and reproductive rates in wildlife populations. Of the various methods available to researchers, hot branding is the most effective, although somewhat controversial, tool available. The physiological effects of hot-iron branding (n = 7) were assessed using temporarily captive juvenile Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) (n = 22). Sea lions showed statistically significant increases in… Show more

“…The handling and marking methods followed guidelines approved by the American Society of Mammalogists (Gannon et al 2007). Although its invasive nature has been highly criticized (Dalton 2005), other studies of pinnipeds have demonstrated that hot branding does not have a negative impact on individual survival, reproductive rates, or behavior (McMahon et al 2006b;Mellish et al 2007;Van Den Hoff et al 2004).…”

“…Due to these constraints, most previous work on otariid endocrinology has used captive animals (e.g., Mashburn and Atkinson 2007). Stress has been measured in response to an acute or chronic stressor, such as short-term captivity with rehabilitated free-ranging sea lions (Petrauskas et al 2008) or during branding procedures required for identification of individual animals (Mellish et al 2007). Studies which measured serum cortisol in free-ranging sea lions showed that concentrations varied by geographic region in Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) pups (Myers et al 2010) and between islands in California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups in the Gulf of California (Padernera-Romano et al 2010).…”

“…Other studies (e.g. Mellish et al 2007, Hastings et al 2009) have shown that branding has little to no measurable impact on health or shortterm (12-wk) survival of juveniles or pups.…”
