Permanent Hearing Loss among Professional Spice Grinders in an Urban Community in Southwest Nigeria

Abstract: This study set out to determine the pattern and predictors of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) among small-scale and self-employed chili pepper grinders in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria. Audiological evaluation was conducted for all participants after noise level measurement. Of 136 studied, 85 (62.5%) were confirmed with slightto-moderate NIHL. Mean age was 40.2 years, mean years spent as grinders was 9.3 years and mean hours spent daily at work was 13.3 hours. The mean age of those with NIHL was significantly hi… Show more

“…[14] The noise levels within such work places and the subsequent degree of occupational hearing loss of market mill workers remains unknown. Evaluation of noise levels within market mill workplaces, together with the hearing assessment of small-scale mill workers, will help to shed light on the health risk of these environments.…”

“…Studies carried out in other industrial sectors found NIHL in 100% of Nigerian traders [25], 96% ginning factory Maharashtra, India [17], 84% steel factory, Indonesia [26], 62.5% spice grinders Nigeria [27], 57% quarry workers Malaysia [28] 56.8% LPG cylinder infusion unit [29], 44% of electro production, Taiwan [30], 43.5% printing industry Nigeria [31], 38.5% oil company Shiraz, Iran [7], 38% two plants in Saudi Arabia [32], 34.90% heavy engineering Kolkata, India [33]. The prevalence of noise related hearing loss in the above mentioned studies is much higher than our findings.…”

“…1 Exposure to occupational noise for a prolonged period of time has been shown to be potentially hazardous. 2,3 Noise becomes hazardous when the sound exceeds 85 dB over a typical eight hour work day. 4 Noise could be present both at home and at work.…”
