Peritoneal sarcomatoid mesothelioma in a sika deer

Abstract: A slaughtered 2-year-old female sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) had diffusely distributed multinodular lesions on the serosal surface of the peritoneal cavity and several nodules in the pleural cavity. Histologically, they were composed of proliferating spindle-shaped neoplastic cells, arranged in a fascicular fashion. The cells in the invasive foci transitioned from a sarcomatoid to an epithelioid appearance. Immunohistochemically, both the spindle-shaped and epithelioid cells were at least focally positi… Show more

“…Estudos experimentais induzindo a exposição de camundongos ao amianto reproduziram as características morfológicas e moleculares comuns ao mesotelioma maligno difuso humano (SAFFIOTTI, 2005;KANE, 2006;ROBINSON et al, 2014), entretanto, pouco se sabe a respeito dos fatores causais do desenvolvimento espontâneo do mesotelioma em animais domésticos e selvagens (WHITON et al, 2013;PELI et al, 2018;MATSUDA et al, 2019;ROCHA et al, 2019).…”

“…Histologically, mesothelioma can be classified into epithelioid, sarcomatoid (fibrous, sarcomatous, spindle cell), and biphasic (mixed) types [ 9 , 12 ]. In domestic animals, most reported cases of mesothelioma have involved the epithelioid types [ 5 , 13 , 22 ], though some cases of biphasic mesothelioma have also been reported [ 2 , 20 , 21 ], along with a few reports of sarcomatoid types [ 14 ]. In this case, neoplastic cells were predominantly spindle-shaped, and thus classified as sarcomatoid mesothelioma.…”
