Peritoneal Function and Adequacy Calculations: Current Programs versus PD Adequest 2.0

Abstract: Objective Our current programs (CPs) were compared to PD Adequest 2.0 (PD-A) for calculations of peritoneal membrane transport and dialysis adequacy. Design Thirty peritoneal equilibration tests (PETs) and 24-hour balances (24hBs) were conducted and calculated using our CPs and PD-A. Patients and Methods Thirty hospital-controlled peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients were studied. The inclusion of correction factors (for glucose or plasmatic water) and of residual volume, and the use of 3 or 6 peritoneal samples … Show more

“…In comparison, only 5% of PD patients has a low transport status (67% has high-average to high peritoneal transport status) [ 36 ]. MTACs of urea, creatinine and phosphate were ~2.7-fold, ~1.9-fold and ~1.5-fold lower than in PD patients [ 37 , 38 , 39 ]. Peritoneal transport usually increases with treatment time due to neoangiogenesis caused by prolonged exposure to glucose-containing PD solutions [ 40 ], resulting in an increase of the effective membrane surface area.…”

“…lower in the pig than in PD-patients (Clerbaux, Francart, Wallemacq, Robert, & Goffin, 2006;Fischbach et al, 2004;Teixidó-Planas, 2002). Consequently, solute concentrations in peritoneal effluent entering the SAPD system were low, accounting for the low absolute removal by the system.…”

“…Mass transfer area coefficients (MTAC) for creatinine and urea were calculated with the RenalSoft software (converted from the PD Adequest software [ 12 ]) from Baxter Healthcare, Deerfield, IL, U.S.A. Correction for plasmatic water concentration was not added, since the main purpose was to compare MTACs from the intervention and control group and not to obtain absolute data.…”
