Peritoneal Dialysis in Africa

Abstract: The potential for successful regular PD programs in tropical countries has now been well established. Cost is a major prohibitive factor but the role of domestic manufacture in facilitating widespread use of PD is evidenced by the South African example. Education and training are direly needed and these are areas where international societies can be of great help.

“…The technical simplicity of peritoneal dialysis (PD) and the potential to reduce costs if consumables can be made locally present an opportunity to establish cost-effective programs for managing AKI. However, to date, PD is not routinely available across sub-Saharan Africa because of cost and a lack of clinical expertise (6,7).…”

“…The total dialysis population of Africa was estimated at 69,800 patients in 2007, indicating a rate of 74 patients per million population compared to a global average of 250 per million (1). Of these patients, only 2,050 (2.9%) were treated by PD.…”

“…The treatment for ESRD in Africa is often limited and the availability of dialysis is variable. In almost half of African countries, no dialysis patients are reported and no kidney transplants are being done (1).…”

“…The cost ratio of HD to CAPD is much lower in LMICs (Table 2). [17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25] Also, dialysis availability in LMICs has thus been challenging given the double burden of communicable and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) that many LMICs are faced with along with the added pressure to distribute health care resources to attend to all health challenges. The high cost of dialysis arises from the different components of service provision.…”
