Perirenal pseudocysts in 26 cats

Abstract: Subcapsular perirenal pseudocysts are formed in cats by accumulation of transudate between the capsule and parenchyma of the kidney as a result of underlying parenchymal disease. Pseudocyst formation can occur at variable stages of renal dysfunction. Resection of the pseudocyst wall is usually effective in eliminating signs but does not stop progression of renal disease. The prognosis for cats with pseudocyst formation is related to the degree of renal dysfunction at time of diagnosis.

“…The other part of the right kidney as well as left one showed no prominent lesions. The present case had similar gross lesions to feline perirenal cyst reported, however the continuity of the cyst to the renal pelvis, epithelial lining and the presence of abundant smooth muscles in the cyst wall differed from findings in the previous reports [3][4][5][6]. Congenital ureteral diverticulum can become very large cyst arising from the distal ureter, midureter, and ureteropelvic junction [7].…”

“…The former that may occur in association with inherited, developmental, or acquired diseases is recognized in the renal parenchyma and are defined as a fluid-filled sac lined by an epithelium. On the other hand, the latter has been used to describe renomegaly caused by accumulation of fluid between renal parenchyma and the surrounding capsule so that it had no epithelial lining and the cause of the disorder is not known and the morphogenesis has not been yet fully investigated [1,3,5]. The words of capsulogenic renal cyst, capsular cyst and pararenal pseudocyst, capsular hydronephrosis or perirenal cyst have been used as a synonym of perirenal pseudocyst [5].…”

“…A moléstia policística pode ser unilateral, e a remoção do rim afetado pode ser aconselhada em decorrência de sua predisposição a infecção (Christie e Bjorling, 2007). Beck et al (2000) e Pigatto et al (2011) consideram que dor persistente, infecção, hematúria recorrente e compressão do sistema coletor renal ou de órgãos adjacentes são indicações para o tratamento de cistos renais simples ou no contexto de doença renal policística.…”

“…Although no sex predilection was detected in a series of cats with PNPs (Ochoa et al, 1999), it seems that, like in our cat, they most often occur in older, male cats (Abdinoor, 1980;Beck et al, 2000;Essman et al, 2000;Hill and Odesnik, 2000;Dennis and McConnell, 2007). The reason why male cats most often develop PNPs remains unclear.…”
